Before you bring the drive: do's and don'ts

• Stop using the drive. Every new file, scan or restart can overwrite or damage the data you want back.
• Switch off a clicking, beeping or grinding drive immediately. Repeated power-ons scratch the platters.
• Do not format, initialize or run CHKDSK, even when Windows asks you to.
• Do not open the drive. Opening a hard disk outside a clean room lets in dust and ends most recoveries.
• Do not try freezer or tapping tricks from the internet.

2. Free diagnosis. We identify the exact fault — logical, firmware, electronic or mechanical — using professional lab equipment, without risking the data.
3. Clear quote. You get the exact price and expected time. Nothing is done without your approval.
4. Repair and safe imaging. If needed, heads or other parts are replaced in our Class 100 certified clean room using matching donor parts. The drive is then copied sector by sector to a healthy lab drive, so the recovery works on a copy.
5. Recovery and checking. Folders and files are rebuilt. You check the list of recovered files before paying.
6. Delivery. Data is delivered on a new drive or your own drive. Our lab copy is deleted after handover.

Why clean room work matters

Inside a hard disk, the read/write heads float a few nanometres above the platters. A single dust particle is much bigger than that gap. When heads are damaged — usually after a drop or from wear — they must be replaced in filtered air, or the new heads are destroyed too and the platters get scratched. Our Class 100 certified clean room is where we open drives for head replacement, motor work and stuck-head (stiction) cases. Internal, external, laptop and desktop drives

External and portable hard disks

WD My Passport, WD Elements, Seagate Backup Plus, Seagate Expansion, Toshiba Canvio and others. Many recent WD portable drives have the USB port and hardware encryption on the drive's own board, so they cannot be "opened and connected inside a PC" — the original board must work for the data to be readable. Desktop and NAS hard disks (3.5")

Laptop hard disks (2.5")

SMR hard disks

Many modern drives use SMR (shingled) recording, which stores data in overlapping tracks managed by the drive's firmware. SMR drives need extra firmware work during recovery, which can take longer. We tell you if your drive is SMR at diagnosis.
