Reliable Pen Drive & USB Data Recovery in Pune
Pen drives are small, cheap and easy to lose data on: a bent connector, a "Please insert disk" message, a drive that suddenly shows 0 bytes or asks to be formatted. DataExpert recovers data from USB pen drives, flash drives and memory cards at our lab in Kalewadi Phata, Pune. Diagnosis is free, you get the exact price before we start, and if no data is recovered you pay nothing.
Pen drive problems we recover from
| What you see | Usual cause |
|---|---|
| "You need to format the disk", RAW file system, folders missing | Damaged file system (often after unsafe removal) |
| Deleted files or accidentally formatted pen drive | Logical loss — usually very recoverable if unused |
| "Please insert a disk into USB drive", 0 bytes, wrong capacity | Controller or firmware failure |
| Not detected at all, gets hot, no light | Failed controller or power components |
| Broken or bent USB connector, drive snapped in half | Physical damage to connector or board |
| Write-protected, read-only | Worn-out flash memory; controller has locked the drive |
| Files open but are corrupted | Bad flash blocks or fake-capacity drive |
What not to do
- Do not format the pen drive when Windows asks you to.
- Do not run CHKDSK or "repair" tools; they can delete damaged folder entries.
- Do not use "low-level format" or "mass production" tools found online — they wipe the drive completely.
- Do not try to solder a broken connector at home. The pads are tiny and easily torn; we see many drives made worse this way.
- Do not save new files to the drive after deleting or formatting.
How pen drive recovery works
Logical recovery (deleted, formatted, RAW)
If the pen drive is detected with its correct size, we clone it first and rebuild the file system from the copy. This is usually quick and very successful, as long as new data has not been written. See also recovering formatted drives.
Connector and board repair
Broken USB connectors and damaged components are repaired under a microscope so the drive can be read once more, just long enough to copy the data safely.
Chip-level recovery
When the controller is dead, the flash memory chip still holds the data — but scrambled by the controller's own algorithms. We read the memory chip directly with professional lab equipment and rebuild the data by reversing the controller's scrambling and error correction. Many modern pen drives and microSD cards are "monolithic" (controller and memory in one sealed package); these need reading through tiny test points on the chip, which is delicate microscope work.
- Free diagnosis to find out whether the problem is logical, electronic or in the controller.
- Exact price and time before any work.
- Recovery — logical cases usually 1–2 days; chip-level cases take longer.
- You check the files before paying, and receive them on a new drive.
Memory cards too
SD and microSD cards from phones, cameras, drones and dashcams fail in the same ways as pen drives and need the same techniques. See memory card data recovery.
Brands we recover
SanDisk, HP, Kingston, Sony, Strontium, Transcend, Samsung, Toshiba, Lexar, Moserbaer, Corsair, Netac, Hi-Speed and unbranded promotional drives. Beware of very cheap high-capacity pen drives: some are "fake capacity" drives that report 1 TB but hold much less, and quietly overwrite your files. We can tell you if that is what happened.
Students and offices: project files and presentations
A large share of the pen drives we receive carry final-year projects, theses, presentations, accounts files and scanned documents with a deadline attached. Tell us about the deadline when you contact us — urgent cases are prioritised where possible. Our article pen drive not opening covers the first checks you can do yourself.
How to avoid losing data on pen drives
- Always use "Eject" before removing the drive.
- Do not keep the only copy of important files on a pen drive — they are meant for carrying, not storing.
- Replace old pen drives that become slow or read-only.
- Avoid unbranded very-high-capacity drives sold cheaply online.

Frequently asked questions
Can data be recovered from a pen drive that is not detected?
Often yes. If the controller has failed, the data is still in the memory chip and can be read with chip-level recovery. The chances depend on the drive type, which we tell you after a free diagnosis.
My pen drive asks to format. What should I do?
Do not format it. The file system is damaged but the files are usually still there. Bring it for recovery or use software only if the drive is otherwise healthy.
Can a broken pen drive be recovered?
Yes, in most cases. A broken connector or board can be repaired under a microscope, and if the memory chip is intact the data can be recovered.
Why does my pen drive show 0 bytes?
This usually means the controller or its firmware has failed. The data is often recoverable at chip level.
How long does pen drive recovery take?
Deleted or formatted data usually takes 1–2 days. Chip-level recovery takes longer. You get the exact time after diagnosis.
How much does pen drive data recovery cost?
It depends on the fault. Diagnosis is free, you get the exact price before any work, and if no data is recovered you pay nothing.
