Act fast: power off the SSD
Most SSDs run a background process called TRIM and garbage collection. When files are deleted or a drive is formatted, the SSD may erase those blocks internally within minutes — permanently. If you deleted files, formatted, or reinstalled Windows on an SSD by mistake:
- Shut down the computer or disconnect the SSD as soon as possible.
- Do not install recovery software or keep using the system.
- Do not run "repair" or firmware update tools on a failing SSD.
For a dead or undetected SSD the advice is the same: stop power-cycling it, as repeated attempts can worsen a failing controller or NAND.

Types of SSDs we handle
2.5" SATA SSDs
Samsung 860/870 EVO, Crucial MX and BX, WD Blue/Green SSD, Kingston A400, SanDisk and many budget brands used in desktop upgrades and older laptops.
M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe SSDs
Samsung 970/980/990, WD Black/Blue SN-series, Crucial P-series, Kingston NV-series and the OEM SSDs inside Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer laptops. NVMe drives use a different interface and need different lab equipment from SATA drives.
Portable SSDs
Samsung T5/T7, SanDisk Extreme, WD My Passport SSD and similar. Many contain an M.2 SSD with a USB bridge inside, and some use hardware encryption.
Soldered SSDs in laptops and MacBooks
In many thin laptops and all recent MacBooks, the SSD chips are soldered on the main board. On Apple T2 and M-series Macs the data is encrypted by the Mac's own security chip, so recovery is only possible by making that board work again. We check this honestly at diagnosis. Why SSD recovery is harder than hard disk recovery
A hard disk stores data in a fixed place on magnetic platters. An SSD's controller spreads data across NAND chips, moves it around constantly for wear levelling, and often encrypts it internally. When the controller or its firmware fails, the data cannot be read by simply connecting the chips elsewhere — the controller's own "map" is needed. That is why SSD recovery needs specialised firmware-level work and why the chances depend heavily on the model. We explain the differences in SSD vs HDD data recovery.
How our SSD recovery works
- Free diagnosis: we identify the controller, firmware state and type of failure.
- Honest chances and exact price: some SSD models are very recoverable, some are not; you know before paying anything.
- Firmware-level access or repair: using professional lab equipment, the SSD is brought into a state where its data can be read, or its electronics are repaired.
- Imaging and recovery: the SSD is copied to a safe lab drive and the files are rebuilt from the copy.
- You check the files, then receive them on a new drive.
Logical and many firmware cases take 1–2 days; electronics and complex controller cases can take longer. If nothing is recovered, there is no charge.
BitLocker and encrypted SSDs
Windows 11 laptops often enable device encryption automatically. If the system board or SSD fails, the data can only be decrypted with the 48-digit recovery key, which is usually saved in the Microsoft account used on the laptop. Tips to protect data on SSDs
- SSDs give little warning before failing — keep a regular backup (3-2-1 rule).
- Note down your BitLocker recovery key.
- Use the original charger and a good surge protector; power faults kill SSD controllers.
- Do not fill an SSD to 100%; nearly full SSDs wear faster.

Can data be recovered from a dead SSD?
Often yes. When the controller, firmware or power circuit fails, the data on the NAND chips is usually still there. Chances depend on the SSD model and the type of failure, which we tell you after a free diagnosis.
Can deleted files be recovered from an SSD?
Sometimes, but it is time-sensitive. TRIM can erase deleted data within minutes. Power the SSD off immediately and bring it in.
My SSD shows 0 GB or SATAFIRM S11. Is the data lost?
Not necessarily. These are typical firmware safe-mode errors, and the data can often be recovered with firmware-level lab work.
Do you recover NVMe SSDs?
