Why WD portable drives need a lab
On most recent WD My Passport and many WD Elements portable drives, the USB connector is part of the drive's own circuit board — there is no separate SATA disk inside to connect to a PC. Many My Passport models also encrypt all data in hardware, even when you never set a password. That means:
- "Taking the disk out of the case" does not work, and attempts to do so often damage the board.
- A replacement board must be adapted to the original drive, otherwise the data stays unreadable.
- If you set a WD Security password, you will need it for the data to be decrypted.

WD SMR drives
Several WD models use SMR (shingled) recording — including many portable drives and some WD Blue and older WD Red (non-Plus) models. SMR drives need extra firmware work during recovery. We tell you at diagnosis if your drive is SMR.
Warranty replacement vs data recovery
WD's warranty replaces a failed drive with a new, empty one — your data is not returned. If you need the data, get it recovered first. DataExpert is an independent lab, not an authorised WD service centre; WD and My Passport are trademarks of Western Digital.

Frequently asked questions
My WD My Passport is not detected. Can the data be recovered?
Usually yes. Most not-detected My Passport drives have a board, firmware or head fault while the data is intact. Because the USB port and encryption are on the drive's board, recovery needs a lab.
Why does my WD drive show as "WD SES Device"?
The drive's USB electronics are working but the disk itself is not responding, usually due to a firmware or head problem. Do not keep reconnecting it; get a free diagnosis.
Can I take the disk out of my WD My Passport and connect it to a PC?
On most recent models, no. The USB port is on the drive's own board and the data is hardware-encrypted, so the original board is needed to read it.
Will WD warranty give me my data back?
