What to do right now

What happens inside a hard disk when it is dropped

A hard disk has spinning glass or metal platters and read/write heads that float a few nanometres above them on a thin cushion of air. That gap is thousands of times thinner than a human hair. A drop can cause several kinds of damage:

• Bent or broken heads: the most common result. The drive clicks or beeps and is not detected.
• Heads stuck on the platter: the motor cannot start, so the drive buzzes or beeps.
• Platter scratches: if the drive was running when it fell, the heads may hit the surface. Scratched areas cannot be read.
• Motor or bearing damage: the platters do not spin, or spin with a grinding sound.
• Broken USB connector or board: sometimes the disk is fine and only the connector or USB board is damaged.

A drive that was off when dropped usually has better chances than one that was running, because the heads were parked away from the data area.

• No sound, no light: broken connector, USB board or PCB.
• Detected but very slow or freezing: one head is weak. Stop copying and get it imaged professionally.
• Works normally: lucky — copy your important data to another drive today, then replace the dropped drive. Dropped drives often fail weeks later.

Portable 2.5" vs desktop 3.5" external drives

Portable drives (WD My Passport, Seagate Backup Plus, Toshiba Canvio and similar) are built to tolerate some knocks, but they are dropped far more often. Many recent WD portable drives have the USB port on the drive's own board and hardware encryption, so the disk cannot simply be moved to another case — recovery needs that original board working.

Desktop external drives (WD My Book, Seagate Expansion Desktop) have larger, heavier platters. They are dropped less, but when they fall while running, the damage is often more severe.
