WD 2TB external hard disk – family memories recovered
The problem
His WD 2TB external hard disk held about 1.5 TB of data, mostly family photos and videos.
The drive failed and he had nearly given up hope of getting the data back.
The result
Most of the family memories were recovered. The recovery focused on the photos and videos that mattered, not on unwanted files.
“I have lost my hope to recover 1.5 tb of data on a 2TB WD external hard disk, but your effort saved most of my family memories data.”
What usually happens to WD external drives
Many WD external drives (My Passport, Elements) have the USB connection built directly onto the drive's circuit board, so the drive cannot simply be taken out of its case and connected by SATA. Many models also encrypt data in hardware, so the recovery has to go through the drive's own board.
Common faults are bad sectors that slow the drive down, worn read/write heads that cause clicking, and damage from drops. Telling the lab which folders matter most lets them recover those first from a weak drive.
If this happens to you
- Unplug the drive if it clicks, beeps, or keeps disconnecting.
- Don't open the case or swap the circuit board.
- Make a list of the folders that matter most (photos, videos, by year).
- Bring or send it for a free diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a WD external drive out of its case and connect it to a PC?
On many WD models, no: the USB port is part of the drive's board and the data may be hardware-encrypted. Opening it can make recovery harder.
Can you recover only the photos and videos?
Yes. Tell us the folders that matter most and we prioritise them, which matters most when the drive is weak.
Is diagnosis free?
Yes. You get the exact price before any work starts, and if no data is recovered you pay no recovery charge.
Every recovery depends on the condition of the device. This case describes one customer's result in their own words; your diagnosis tells you what is possible for yours.
