What a drop does to a laptop drive

If the laptop has a spinning hard disk, a drop while it is running can make the read/write heads touch the platters. The drive may then click, stay silent, or be very slow. Every power-on after that can scratch the platters further.

If the laptop has an SSD, the drive usually survives the knock, and the problem is more often the laptop's board, screen or the SSD connector. In both cases the data can often be recovered, as long as the drive is not run again and again.

If this happens to you

  • Don't keep switching the laptop on to 'see if it works'.
  • If you hear clicking or scraping, turn it off at once.
  • Don't open the hard disk itself.
  • Bring the laptop, or just its drive, for a free diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

My laptop fell and won't start. Is the data gone?

Usually not. Often only the laptop is damaged, or the hard disk needs lab work. Stop powering it on and get it checked.

Should I send the whole laptop or only the drive?

Either works. If you are unsure how to remove the drive, send the laptop.

How long does it take?

If only the laptop is damaged, often a day or two. A physically damaged hard disk usually takes 3–5 days.

Every recovery depends on the condition of the device. This case describes one customer's result in their own words; your diagnosis tells you what is possible for yours.
