Modern Android phones and iPhones encrypt everything stored on them. The encryption is tied to the phone's own hardware and to your screen password, PIN or pattern. That means the memory chip cannot simply be read in another device: the data has to be decrypted on the phone's own board, with your password. Without the correct password, no lab can recover the data.
