Old discs can hold irreplaceable memories
Wedding films, family photographs, camera recordings and documents are often stored on a CD-R or DVD-R with no second copy. A disc may still show files yet fail partway through copying, or play on a television while freezing on a computer. These symptoms need assessment rather than repeated playback attempts.
DataExpert at Kalewadi Phata, Pune accepts CD and DVD recovery enquiries. Tell us whether you need videos, photos or documents, when the disc last worked and what happened before the fault. If another copy exists with your photographer or family, preserve that too.
Disc problems to include in your enquiry
- Scratched CD or DVD with read errors or copying that stops midway.
- A DVD that freezes, skips scenes or has broken audio during playback.
- VIDEO_TS folders or VOB files that no longer open correctly.
- A recorded disc that appears blank or has missing sessions.
- Small camcorder DVDs that cannot be opened on the current drive.
- A visibly cracked disc or damaged recording layer requiring inspection first.
For camcorder discs, share the camera model and whether the recording was finalized. Keep the camera and any existing copies available; do not finalize or format the only source as a trial fix.
Surface scratches and lost recording data are different
A mark on the surface does not by itself show how much data is lost. Reading can depend on the type of disc and the optical drive. Damage to the actual recording layer is more serious: data physically absent from that layer cannot be recovered from the affected area.
A photograph can help describe the condition, but it cannot establish a recovery percentage. A cracked disc should not be tested in an ordinary drive. Avoid glue, abrasive household products and power-tool polishing; preserve its present condition for inspection.
How CD and DVD recovery is assessed
- Inspect the source. Review the disc type, physical condition, symptoms and previous attempts before deciding whether reading is appropriate.
- Preserve readable data. Where safe and technically feasible, capture readable sectors into a separate recovery image and identify unreadable areas.
- Extract the requested contents. Assess file-system structures, recording sessions and available files from the recovery copy.
- Check the result. Open recovered documents and photographs, and review video playback. Explain incomplete files and gaps before handover.
The recovery route and quote depend on assessment. Some discs yield only partial contents; a full recovery is not guaranteed.
Wedding DVD recovery and video repair
A VOB file copied from a DVD can still contain damaged video or audio. Recovering the file and obtaining a watchable film are separate steps. Where the footage is readable, video repair or conversion can be considered as a separate part of the scope.
An MP4 export does not bring back missing wedding scenes. Tell us which parts of the recording matter most and share any existing VOB, IFO or BUP files without deleting their originals. Keep a recovered copy on a different storage device.

Ask DataExpert about recovery and pickupFrequently asked questions
Can a scratched CD or DVD be recovered?
Sometimes. Surface damage, recording quality, drive compatibility and the condition of the recording layer all affect readability. Assessment may find complete files, only partial data, or no recoverable contents.
Can you recover a wedding DVD or VOB video files?
We assess wedding DVDs and available VOB files. Readable footage may be recoverable even if normal playback fails, but missing sectors can leave gaps, freezes or damaged sound. A playable result needs checking throughout.
What should I do with a cracked disc?
Stop putting it into drives and keep it in a protective case for assessment. Do not glue, bend or use a drill to polish it. A cracked disc needs physical inspection before any reading attempt.
Will converting a damaged VOB file to MP4 restore missing scenes?
No. Conversion may make readable footage easier to play, but it cannot recreate original frames or audio that are missing. File recovery and video repair are assessed separately.
How much does CD or DVD recovery cost in Pune?
A quote follows diagnosis and depends on the disc condition, read errors, amount of data and whether video repair is needed. Tell us which files matter most; recovery work starts after scope and cost approval.
Is a disc that Windows cannot detect always unrecoverable?
No. Drive compatibility, recording sessions and damaged disc structures can affect detection. Physical damage can also prevent reading. The Windows message alone cannot establish the recovery outcome.
